Friday Night Funkin': The Best Indie Game I've Played in a While

So, what is Friday Night Funkin'? It's an indie rhythm game that has gameplay reminiscent of PaRappa the Rapper and Dance Dance Revolution along with an aesthetic reminiscent of early-2000s era Flash games. Friday Night Funkin' was developed by four Newgrounds users and released online for the said site, along with an APK download released on itch.io. I'm doing a review of it today as I have been playing the game for the past few days and have been enjoying it quite a lot. Though, there is a major flaw to it.

The Review

Alright, so let me explain what Friday Night Funkin' is. I've already told you that it's a rhythm game, but I haven't told you about the game. So it basically works Simon Says, where you have to mimic the notes played by the opponent, though in rare occurrences, you get to duet with your opponent. The story mode gameplay pits you against Daddy Dearest and the assassins he hires because he doesn't want you to be his daughter's boyfriend (Weird, huh?). You'll have to pass multiple levels, or "weeks", which contain about 3 songs each (with the exception of Week 2). Your opponents would consist of Daddy Dearest, Skid and Pump, Pico, Mommy Must Murder, the Lemon Demon, and Senpai.

The songs produced for these games sound really good, as I tend to listen to them a lot on Spotify. Not only that, but the design for the characters look pretty nice and cute (especially Skid and Pump, the Boyfriend, the Girlfriend, and Pico). Though, I would like to point out a flaw of its own.

The mapping for the songs doesn't make sense, as it doesn't tend to sync with the song most of the time (like not noting a few beeps). This makes it hard to play some of the songs.

Verdict

Alright, now's the moment of the truth. My verdict? It's good, but it's not perfect. I would suggest improving the mapping in order to perfectly sync with the beeping. That's mostly just it. I rate it an even 7/10. If the mapping was perfect, I would've given it a 10/10.

Now that I've left you guys a link to the game, I suggest that you guys take the time to check it out. The game is pretty cool, I might say. JJ, over and out. -JJ
